Never miss a return window: a simple system for tracking deadlines

By Moggers Admin · September 26, 2026 · 4 min read

Why return windows get missed

You buy, you try on at home, you think you will decide tomorrow. Then work happens, and the window closes.

Most US stores give 14 to 60 days, but it varies a lot. Final sale, worn outside, washed, or missing tags can void a return even inside the window.

The fix is not willpower. It is a system that shows you the soonest deadline first, every time you open your closet.

The simple system

Four steps, done at purchase.

1. Log the deadline the day you buy. When you add a piece to moggers, add the return deadline and store, and put the order number in the notes. Use the date on the receipt, not your guess. If the site says 30 days from delivery, add delivery date plus 30.

2. Keep tags on and do not wash until you decide. Tags on, no wash, no outside wear, no deodorant marks. For shoes, try indoors only. Brands check for wear.

3. Set a try-on date within 48 hours. Do not wait until the last week. Try on with two outfits you would actually wear. Take a phone photo of each.

4. Decide by 70 percent of the window. If window is 30 days, decide by day 21. That gives buffer for shipping back or going to the store. In moggers, the Spend tab lists return deadlines soonest first, so you see what needs a decision now.

What to note when you add a piece

Add these fields when you log a new item. It takes a minute and saves a return later.

If you bought from a marketplace or secondhand, mark it as final sale or note the shorter window. Some marketplaces give 3 days.

I almost ate a $90 overshirt because I “knew” I had 30 days. The clock started at delivery, not at the order date, and I had already worn it outside once. I caught it with four days left, tags still on the spare, and mailed it the same afternoon. Now the deadline goes in the notes before the package even hits the closet.

The weekly 5-minute check

Once a week, open the Spend tab in moggers, where returns are listed soonest first.

Anything due in the next 7 days gets a yes or no. Yes means keep: mark it kept, and wear it in an outfit to start cost per wear tracking. No means start the return now, not later.

For mail returns, check who pays shipping and if you need a label. Some stores deduct return shipping. Log that cost so your price paid stays accurate if you keep something similar later.

For in-store returns, put the item by your keys or in your car right away. Out of sight turns into missed returns.

How to decide keep vs return

Use three questions.

Do I have something that does this job already? Check cost per wear of similar pieces. If you own a white tee at $0.90 per wear that fits well, a new one needs to be clearly better to stay.

Did I wear it in real life, not just the mirror? Mirror try-ons hide heat and movement issues. Wear it for a half day at home. Does it ride up, cling, show sweat, or need constant adjusting?

Does it fit my 5 slots? Can you build at least three outfits with pieces you already own? If not, it may be a good piece for someone else.

If answer is no to two of three, return it.

A black cargo I liked in photos failed two of three. I already had olive shorts that did the same job, it clung after an hour inside, and I could only build one outfit that did not look costume. Sent it back. The keep pile is smaller and I actually wear it.
